A
true role model in sport is someone who works hard each
and every day at practice, strives to be the best athlete
they can be, sets goals for themselves, is a strong team
player and leader and who gives back to the sport in which
they compete. Breda Vosters is a role model.
A
member of the Youth National Team since 2006, Breda exemplifies
all of the attributes and characteristics of a sport role
model. For this reason, coupled with her accomplishments
in the pool, Breda has received the prestigious “Women to
Watch” grant from Sport Manitoba.
Breda
Vosters has been playing water polo with the Bushido Aquatic
Club since the age of 6. Since this young age, she has increased
her level and frequency of training that has now become
a six day per week commitment.
This
past summer, Breda was named to the Canadian Team competing
at the Youth National Pan American Games held in Santo Domingo,
Dominican Republic. Breda 's leadership also gave her the
honor of being named as the Canadian Team Captain.
In
addition, Breda was selected by the Senior Women's National
team coaching staff to train and compete as a player on
the Canadian Select League in Montreal . This selection
is a true testament to her skills, athleticism and maturity.
It allows her to train in Montreal with Senior and Junior
National teams year-round. This additional opportunity for
training will aid Breda as she strives to compete in Junior
World's in 2009 and the Olympics in London in 2012.
The
things that make Breda such a role model are not just about
her athletic achievements: they are things like her humility
and avoidance of the spotlight, the fact that she would
much rather be highlighted as a “team” than as an individual,
the fact that she volunteers her time coaching to pass on
her knowledge and leadership to younger players.
Breda
is not only a role model for women in sport, but for all
athletes in sport and all people in life.
